We are grateful to have several special guests to join us in honoring the West Valley Food Pantry for their incredible year of service to our local community in need.

In 1975 Margaret Shively started a food pantry to help a few community members in need. Ten years later with the help of retired social worker Clem Matzin, an interfaith coalition of churches and temples was created and was named West Valley Food Pantry (WVFP). Kol Tikvah was one of the founding members of this coalition under the leadership of Kol Tikvah founding member, Grace Latt. Our goal in joining this group was to fulfill the value of tzedakah and to ensure a pathway for people in need to receive food with dignity and without shame. Today, Herm Fischer, Kol Tikvah member, is the WVFP’s Chairman of the Board.

During unprecedented times, our community and coalition partner, the WVFP has given us great "Food For Thought" regarding the value of loving our neighbors and feeding the hungry. Throughout  the pandemic, they continued to offer a safe way to help the growing number of families who were living with food insecurities. As the need quadrupled due to COVID-19, they continued to Feed the Need and ensure "no one goes away hungry." We are grateful for their service and dedication to the community, and we are proud to honor the West Valley Food Pantry, under the leadership of Executive Director, Debbie Decker with the distinction of the “Tikkun Olam” Award at our Annual Gala on May 8.
